What kind of Mayor wants to raze City Hall?

There’s an AP article reprinted on WTOPnews.com that says that the Boston Mayor has suggested selling City Hall and its surrounding brick plaza to developers, and building a new City Hall elsewhere. WTOP judged this story to be weird enough that it’s included in the “Watercooler” stories section – which I can only take to mean that the editors on the WTOP site haven’t actually seen this thing.

I have. If I were the Mayor of Boston, I’d suggest razing City Hall in every meeting. Sometimes twice. I have to say that it is the single ugliest piece of civic architecture I have ever seen in my life, and working in D.C., that’s not easily said.

The article describes it as “a modernist style known as ‘brutalism’.” I’d describe it as a massive, looming, incongruous eyesore surrounded by a dismal wasteland of concrete.

More unflattering pictures and discussion on Wikipedia.
